Dr. Wheat’s nomination for the MMSA Billy Cooper Award was supported by many fellow mycologists who recognize his clinical contributions to the field of mycology. His accomplishments include advancing the medical community’s understanding of the basic biology of fungal pathogenesis, expert clinical care and the development and validation of clinical laboratory tests for diverse mycoses.
Mairi Noverr, Ph.D, the President of MMSA, says in a letter to Dr. Wheat, “The assays that you developed, especially the innovative urinary Histoplasma urinary EIA, represent major advances in mycological diagnostics. Your diagnostic assays have truly been invaluable to patient care for ~20 years, which is indeed a remarkable achievement.”
