Dr. Nicolas Barros serves as Clinical Advisor to MiraVista Diagnostics, bringing academic transplant infectious disease expertise to the company’s fungal diagnostics work. He is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Indiana University School of Medicine and Medical Director of Transplant Infectious Diseases at IU Health University Hospital in Indianapolis. He earned his MD from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru, and completed his infectious disease fellowship training at UT Southwestern Medical Center, followed by a subspecialty fellowship in transplant infectious diseases and the immunocompromised host at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He is a board-certified diplomate in both Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases.
Since 2022, Dr. Barros has served as principal investigator or site principal investigator on MiraVista-affiliated research, including a study on the diagnosis of histoplasmosis in adults (with Indiana University) and a coccidioidomycosis cytokine release assay study (with the University of Arizona). His peer-reviewed work includes a 2023 clinical update on pulmonary histoplasmosis co-authored with MiraVista’s founding scientist, Dr. L. Joseph Wheat. That combination of transplant infectious disease practice and applied fungal diagnostics research directly informs his advisory guidance to MiraVista on clinical relevance, physician education, and responsible test utilization.
